The International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW) General Meeting 2026 officially commenced on 23 June 2026 at the Maanzoni 680 Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya, bringing together social work leaders and representatives from across the globe to shape the future of the profession.
The opening day focused on governance, accountability, organizational growth, and strengthening international cooperation among member associations. Delegates adopted the meeting agenda, approved the minutes of the 2024 General Meeting, and reviewed reports from all IFSW regions, including Africa, Asia Pacific, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and North America.
Regional leaders highlighted achievements, challenges, and strategic priorities, with a strong emphasis on professional leadership, advocacy, membership engagement, and regional collaboration. The IFSW President and Secretary General also presented updates on the Federation's progress and future direction.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to governance and financial accountability. Delegates reviewed governance reports, financial statements for 2024 and 2025, and considered motions relating to external auditing, reaffirming IFSW's commitment to transparency and institutional excellence.
One of the most memorable moments of the day was the recognition of Rory Truell for his exceptional service and enduring contribution to the global social work profession.
Membership expansion remained a key priority, with applications from Belgium, Benin, Somalia, and South Africa scheduled for further consideration on Day Two.
Looking ahead, delegates were excited to learn that Malawi will host the next IFSW Africa Regional Conference in Lilongwe from 26 to 31 October 2027.
As Day One concluded, the atmosphere remained optimistic and forward looking, reflecting a shared commitment to advancing social work values, strengthening professional leadership, and building a more connected global social work community.
Day Two is expected to focus on elections, policy development, commission reports, strategic motions, and decisions that will shape the future direction of IFSW worldwide.
