On June 28-29, 2024, presidents and delegates from six West African countries convened in Lomé, Togo, to network and develop a strategic plan for the International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW) West Africa Sub Region. This significant event brought together notable figures, including representatives from the Togo Ministry of Social Development, local government Representative, the principal School of Social Work, the representative of the country director, Plan International, a representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Togo, and a representative of Corsant, a non-governmental organization.
The attendees were enthusiastic about the IFSW's efforts to unite social work associations from both francophone and anglophone countries, ensuring no one is left behind. The meeting provided a platform for participants to share their experiences regarding operational methods, membership drives, legislative efforts, resource mobilization, and partnership opportunities with stakeholders and development partners. Success stories and challenges were discussed, culminating in a collective commitment to support one another and work together as a cohesive network of social workers in West Africa.
Key Objectives Outlined:
1. Promote Bilateral Cooperation: Foster cooperation among subregional social work associations.
2. Regulate Social Work Practice: Advocate for legislation to standardize social work practices across West Africa.
3. Enhance Competence Development: Ensure social workers are adequately trained to respond to emergency situations.
4. Advocate for Increased Funding: Push for higher budgetary allocations for social work institutions in member countries.
The event's success was greatly aided by interpreters: Abib, Clement, and Michael, facilitating communication among participants. All attendees agreed to take advantage of this opportunity to learn and communicate in each other's languages in preparation for the 2025 Africa Social Work Conference in Dakar, Senegal.
