Theme: Unity, Governance & Action for Social Work in Africa
Social workers from across Africa gathered in Nairobi, Kenya during the Global Social Work Conference for the IFSW Africa Region Members' Meeting. Under the leadership of the IFSW Africa Regional President, delegates came together to address the biggest challenges facing the profession and agree on concrete next steps.
Key Highlights from the Meeting
1. Child Protection: A Continental Priority
Delegates raised urgent concern over the rising number of vulnerable children on African streets and weak child protection systems. The region committed to joint advocacy for stronger legislation, safeguarding policies, and coordinated interventions across countries.
2. Strengthening Unity and Professional Standards
Members agreed: unity is non-negotiable. The meeting called for harmonized social work education, stronger regulation, and stopping unqualified practice. We also need curricula that reflect African realities and more field-based training.
3. Better Support for Social Workers
Challenges highlighted included poor funding, poor office conditions, low pay, and limited government recognition. Nigeria delegates specifically noted the lack of GBV shelters and workforce attrition. The region resolved to advocate for improved working conditions, legislation, and qualified social workers in leadership roles.
4. Building a Stronger IFSW Africa
The Regional Executive outlined governance gaps: no permanent office, no regional bank account, and limited resources. Resolutions included forming 5 thematic committees Governance, Resource Mobilisation, Communication, Child Protection, and Education plus developing an Africa Regional Constitution and database of social workers.
5. Resource Mobilisation & Visibility
Delegates proposed a Resource Mobilisation Committee, diaspora partnerships, and better use of the IFSW website to showcase African work. Research was emphasized as key to advocacy and policy change.
Major Resolutions Adopted
1. Establish 5 thematic committees and produce progress reports before Malawi 2027
2. Develop an Africa Regional Governance Framework and Constitution
3. Create a database of African social workers + diaspora members
